The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

Book review!

Book summary:

“Bree Tanner can barely remember life before she had uncannily powerful senses, superhuman reflexes, and unstoppable physical strength. Life before she had a relentless thirst for blood… life before she became a vampire.

All Bree knows is that living with her fellow newborns has few certainties and even fewer rules: watch your back, don’t draw attention to yourself, and above all, make it home by sunrise or die. What she doesn’t know: her time as an immortal is quickly running out.

Then Bree finds an unexpected friend in Diego, a newborn just as curious as Bree about their mysterious creator, whom they only know as her. As they come to realize that the newborns are pawns in a game larger than anything they could have imagined, Bree and Diego must choose sides and decide whom to trust. But when everything you know about vampires is based on a lie, how do you find the truth?”

My honest review:

Honestly, I was expecting more. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Stephenie Meyer, and so I was expecting this book to be good, but I was disappointed.

I feel like the overall idea is cool, and the thought that all of our myths and legends about vampires may not be true, is fun to consider. Though I liked the idea of this plot, I found myself not enjoying this book as much as I had hoped I would. The world building was good, and the characters were pretty well developed for this short of a book, but the way it was written confused me at times. I also feel like more explanation on the “Yellow eyes” and why the main group was attacking them would have been nice.

One of the reasons I was drawn to this book was because of the title. How would I not be curious about a book where the MC dies at the end, and I have to say, after finishing this book I do wonder what they did to Bree.

While this was not my favorite book, I still think it was worth trying out, and worth the day it took me to read it. I still have the Twilight series on my TBR and I have high hopes for it, so we’ll see!
